September, 2026. We subjected ourselves to our annual ride on this bumpy section of the trail. Parked in Emlenton and made it 7 miles to just North of the Rockland tunnel. It's gotten worse since last year. More roots have pushed up the asphalt pavement. Bump after bump after bump then smooth for a very short distance, then more bumps. And it repeats itself over and over. Doesn't appear the grass along side of the trail had been mowed in a while, had to be a foot tall. Rockland Tunnel is lengthy, you need a light. The doors at the South entrance were installed a few years ago since the tunnel leaks and it would freeze in there and long dangerous icicles would form. Even in the Summer there's a trickling of water. This summer was very rainy so there's gonna be a leaky ceiling in there! On the plus side, the trail offers beautiful scenery, and views of the Allegheny River and plenty of shade.
Very nice trail, only downside is to complete the loop you have to ride from the parking area to the Marina on a roadway.
It's been a few months so we thought we'd bike ride the Foxburg to Parker section of the trail. This section is 2.5 miles in length and detached from the remainder of the trail. Since our last visit the roots pushing up the asphalt pavement have really increased and it was a lot worse than our last ride. It was mostly a rough ride.
September, 2026. Labor Day weekend ride. Beautiful holiday weekend out on the trail. Always enjoyable ride on this trail. We rode from end to end and extra. Trail does not go through Andover town but follow the signs and take the streets. There are a few places to eat nearby.
Started at Swine Creek where there’s a smelly pit toilet where you can change lol. Nicely paved and maintained trail, just a few bumps, mostly at the Chardon end. Only water fountains seem to be around Chardon as well, so take plenty with you. Return trip seemed to go a little easier but not much elevation change overall, other than some serious hills (both ways) during the portion paralleling Route 44 near the northern end of the trail. For some reason the trail is not quite as well marked when you’re going south, at least through Middlefield and especially the on-road section back to Swine Creek; didn’t have any problem going north.
Starting at the south end, initially I was disappointed at the lack of any historical signage, these are always a big plus for me; around Chardon however there are quite a few railroad history markers, so that made up for it. And I’m probably an outlier here, but even though the faux covered bridges are cute, it almost seems like the trail designers tried to erase most vestiges of the trail’s railroading past; other than the very informative markers in Chardon, practically no railroading evidence exists, but then I’m a bit of a train nerd. Scenery was very pleasant, with the trail length and nice surface (and lotsa nearby breweries, taverns, and overall quaint towns all over this part of the state), could be considered a destination trail.
We rode the GAP from Cedar Creek Park to the Boston trailhead at the base of the Historic Boston Bridge and back. About 36 miles round trip. What a great ride. Smooth trail with lots of benches and several picnic areas and toilet facilities. Well maintained. Passed through several little communities along the trail. No major highways and very few little roads to cross making it very safe. Got a delicious huge “medium” size ice cream cone at the “Big Twist” in Blythedale, right off the trail. Highly recommend this ride!
We biked from mile 0 at the Trumbull/Ashtabula county line to Austinburg and back. Passed through Orwell and had lunch. Trail very well shaded and in good condition but a few root liftings in the asphalt but not a deal breaker. Enjoyed our stop in Austinburg but saddened to see that Shannon's mini mart is now closed since the owners retired after almost 20 years there.
Started at the parking lot and trailhead in Franklin and biked North to Oil City. Once in Oil City follow the signs through town as share the road only for a few blocks. Biked from Franklin to Oil City, grabbed lunch and one of the many trail friendly eateries, and biked back. Also, about a month ago there was a sink hole that opened up about the size of a dinner plate. It was filled with asphalt but opened back up. Since then they discovered it was a pipe under the trail that rotted. The trail was dug up, new pipe put in place, recovered and repatched with asphalt. See photo. All good to to!
We did the entire paved path including the little extension near Meadville. Very nice!
We travel almost 2 hours to get to this trail and worth the drive. One of Ohio's nicest trails. Asphalt paved in very good condition, pretty scenery, well maintained by Geauga County Parks, numerous benches along the route, grass cut, trash cans emptied and nice restrooms. There are 5 covered bridges along the trail. Most of the trail is full sun so make sure you slather up with sunscreen on a sunny day. We parked at Headwaters Park and biked up to Chardon for lunch and back. Then biked down to Middlefield. Total miles 30 round trip. Was sad to see the fountain at the Middlefield end of the trail was not working and the trellis removed and no hanging flower baskets.
We parked at Kirk Road and biked to the Mahoning/Trumbull County line and picked up the Niles Bikeway into Niles for additional miles. MetroParks Bikeway has been repaved within the past few years, surface good. Not a whole lot of shade though. There is a bike rental at the Kirk Road trailhead. Also sells bottled water. We headed towards Canfield on the trail in the opposite direction. Great trail!
