Conotton Creek Trail

Nice Trail with Lots of Wildlife and Flowers

June, 2019 by blndgenie

We rode this trail for the first time and had a really great time - there are a lot of bluebirds since someone has installed many bluebird boxes, as well as many other species. Saw numerous deer and enjoyed a variety of wildflowers, and passed very few other people. A few patches are slightly washboard-like but nothing significant. Gazebos with seating, benches and covered bridges on the way, with beautiful plantings by some wonderful local garden clubs. My husband absolutely loved seeing the huge natural gas plant - rode by it for about half a mile! Stopped at the DQ for ice cream at the end point before heading back to the car park at Bowerston.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Scenic, But a Rough Ride, More like a Road Ride w/o the traffic

May, 2019 by lwwied

On Memorial Day Weekend 2019, we road our bikes 50 miles from Massillon (Hampton Inn is just a block away from the trail) north to Northfield and back the next day. We routinely ride 50 plus miles on rail trails and towpath trails. (GAP trail, Erie Canal in NY) I had lots of problems with this trail. I had checked for alerts, and what I had found greatly understated the problem areas.
At Manchester Road, the path was blocked and under reconstruction with no marked detour. We followed others under the equipment, walking our bikes over some gravelly areas (.2 miles or so?) and then lifted our bikes over the fence at the end.
Through Barberton, the trail is lovely but the rolling terrain follows the ups and downs of the hills rather than the level ride of a towpath or train bed.
In downtown Akron, there are confusing signs and roadblocks. We went one way on the way there, and another on the way back, but doable.
After Mustil Store, the trail has been detoured straight uphill for about 1 mile before putting you back on huge gravel chunks for a bit before returning you to the trail. Very frustrating because you can see the rail bed below you proceeding on it's flat and steady route. I wanted to walk on the tracks instead of the detour, but caution got the better of me.
We stopped at R Shea Brewing on Merriman Rd for lunch which was great. The Path signage around there was confusing.
The scenery along the way is lovely with the usual geese, ducks, turtles, etc and wonderful birds around the Beaver Marsh and Summit Lake.
But there are many areas where the trail bed needed some attention. Rocky, rutted, little or no crushed asphalt.
We stayed at a lovely B&B in Northfield, Shady Oaks. But the road to reach it was an evil 1.5 mile hill. I would only recommend it to others if the owners agree to pick you up at the trail. I didn't know to ask!
So, I can see that this is a good trail and I'm glad we did it, but I would tell people that it's just not in that great shape for a long ride right now.

Zeisberger Trail

A Hiking Trail Only

April, 2019 by orangedoug

The current description of the trail here at TrailLink does says that the wood chip surface is good only for hiking/walking and mountain biking. I would limit activity to hiking and walking. There is lots of sticks and roots on the towpath on the northern end of the trail and some very deep car tire ruts in the mid-section of the trail. At best you could ride it, but with such a short length why waste your time and risk puncturing a tire. I am not trying to belittle the Zeisberger Trail and Parks group (ZTAP) trying to develop this trail, and connect it to nearby communities, but there is much work to be done before I would recommend riding your bike on this trail.

Panhandle Passage Trail

A Nice Local Trail

April, 2019 by orangedoug

I rode the Panhandle Passage Trail in Dennison and Uhrichsville, Ohio. This isn't so much of a trail as it is an on-street loop through the parks and recreational areas of these twin towns. The most interesting or unusual part of the ride was a twisted loop through Uhrichsville’s cemetery. The only "trail" here was within Dennison's McCluskey Park around the baseball fields and playground. The route is great for the locals but it is not something I would tell people to go out of their way to ride.

Conotton Creek Trail

An entertaining rural trail ride.

April, 2019 by orangedoug

I drove about an hour and a half to ride this trail. The trail has quite a few amenities, a paved surface, rain & picnic shelters, benches and bird boxes. There are quite a few points of interest that are visually appealing -- small ponds, covered bridges, a Natural Gas Gathering facility, the architecture of older manufacturing towns. For an April Sunday, there were quite a few people out riding or walking on the trail, but it never felt crowded. It certainly seems that the people of the area enjoy and use their trail.

My one complaint is that the trail surface while paved, is of an inconsistent quality. Numerous areas of the trail give the rider a washboard effect why passing over them. It would certainly help to have the entire length of this trail resurfaced.

The OTET is Awesome!

December, 2018 by blzbikebox

Rode this trail from Cincinnati to Cleveland and back in three weeks. The best touring I’ve ever done. This trail is very well kept. To me, Columbus to Massillon was the most scenic. But it’s hard to find any part of this ride that wasn’t great. I went in late September and had only one rainy day followed by a half day of light drizzle. Xenia, Millersville, and Mt. Vernon were my favorite stops. Can’t wait to do it again!

Holmes County Trail

Beautiful ride but steep

September, 2018 by bcyclgeezer

I just did the newest section, Brinkhaven to Glenmont, today, and it was totally beautiful. Very isolated, very quiet. Two warnings, however. First, there are a few tiny bollards, about 18" high, designed to keep the Amish buggies from using one side of the trail. There aren't too many of them, but they are very solid looking. I wouldn't want to hit one. Second, this trail is a mighty climb for about half its length (then a mighty descent). First time I have needed the granny gear on a Rails-to-Trails. This must have been a REALLY challenging railroad! There are a lot of nice picnic tables along the way for you to rest, and the whole trip is definitely worth the sweat.

Down to Earth

September, 2018 by drchris2

My wife and I took this trail on recently. It is definitely rustic compared to the asphalted bikeways we are used to. Not being paved it has its share of tree roots and adventure navigating the path. Thus, I would call it a “real” trail in the same vein that I would call the old cinder high school tracks “real” tracks! Give it a shot. Very enjoyable!
