Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

The OTET is Awesome!

December, 2018 by blzbikebox

Rode this trail from Cincinnati to Cleveland and back in three weeks. The best touring I’ve ever done. This trail is very well kept. To me, Columbus to Massillon was the most scenic. But it’s hard to find any part of this ride that wasn’t great. I went in late September and had only one rainy day followed by a half day of light drizzle. Xenia, Millersville, and Mt. Vernon were my favorite stops. Can’t wait to do it again!

Holmes County Trail

Beautiful ride but steep

September, 2018 by bcyclgeezer

I just did the newest section, Brinkhaven to Glenmont, today, and it was totally beautiful. Very isolated, very quiet. Two warnings, however. First, there are a few tiny bollards, about 18" high, designed to keep the Amish buggies from using one side of the trail. There aren't too many of them, but they are very solid looking. I wouldn't want to hit one. Second, this trail is a mighty climb for about half its length (then a mighty descent). First time I have needed the granny gear on a Rails-to-Trails. This must have been a REALLY challenging railroad! There are a lot of nice picnic tables along the way for you to rest, and the whole trip is definitely worth the sweat.

Ohio Canal Greenway

Down to Earth

September, 2018 by drchris2

My wife and I took this trail on recently. It is definitely rustic compared to the asphalted bikeways we are used to. Not being paved it has its share of tree roots and adventure navigating the path. Thus, I would call it a “real” trail in the same vein that I would call the old cinder high school tracks “real” tracks! Give it a shot. Very enjoyable!

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Bucket List (Still)

August, 2018 by geneaud

2-day trip planned from Western PA to bike one way and ride train back. Drove pike to Route 21 (area) but somehow could not relate to directions to Canal Towpath. Found Brecksville train station to park and cycled to and into Cleveland (Port of Cleve) and returned with 34 miles of enjoyable riding even with fear of getting lost in Cleve. city streets. Could not locate North Akron train station so followed directions to Berlin. During a previous search I had found Ft. Laurens park and trail entrance but did not realize that it is in fact the Zoar trail and resembles canal towpath but not Ohio & Erie. Rode south to Route 800 and across biker friendly river bridge, but could not convince myself to search trail signs any further. Rode into and North of Berlin to find the much improved trail and enjoyed yet another 27 miles of towpath riding. Having been born and raised in Southern Tusc. County, I will hope to search out the Zoar trailhead and explore much more as only an 81 year old rider can do.

Wheeling Heritage Trails

Great Trails

July, 2018 by fdb3

I began at the Elm Grove Trailhead on the Wheeling Creek Trail and continued north on the Ohio River Trail until it was under water from the recent heavy rains. I should have been within just a couple miles of the northern most trailhead as I traveled out 17.5 miles. I did not ride the southern portion of the Ohio River Trail choosing to go back to the car when the Wheeling Creek Trail intersected.

The Hempfield Tunnel and Viaduct are amazing. The tunnel was obviously for a mainline as it is wide enough for two sets of railroad tracks. Obviously a train has not passed through the tunnel in many years as a huge branch has grown over the eastern entrance to the tunnel well above cyclists. The tunnel was built in 1904 and made to last as the interior and the facades are lined with brick. Unfortunately taggers have left their mark with graffiti but it could be worse.

The paved surface is in very good shape considering the winters that it suffers. There were some rough areas in the pavement, but very few and that beats gravel!. The trail is completely flat along the Ohio river and it goes from urban in Downtown Wheeling then back and forth between wilderness and industrial. No complaints over a lack of majestic scenery as the river is always nearby. The Pike Island Lock Complex is intriguing.

I rate it 9 gears (based on a 10 speed cassette)

Have split up the trail into several sections from Cleveland to Mass. Really enjoy it. Curious if section North of Mustill Store is open yet. Had been rerouted for sewer project, I think.

Good biking trail except that the areas of uncrushed limestone make for rough riding. Did not try the trail south of Rt. 800 due to previous reports that it is difficult riding.

Kokosing Gap Trail

Great ride

Truly peaceful and beautiful ride. Enjoyed viewing the Kokosing Gap Train, and catching some rest in the shelter beside the train... I completed the 27 miles in a few hours, and I plan on doing it again soon...

Mohican Valley Trail

absolutely gorgeous

June, 2018 by aaron.shaffer_tl

I rode this trail today and wow, it's beautiful. The trail is incredibly well maintained, but there was almost no one on it. It had few road crossings and I couldn't hear cars in any direction -- very remote, very peaceful, very relaxing! Green in every direction.
