Recent Trail Reviews

Holmes County Trail

WCI Biking Division

July, 2020 by wci biking division

WCI Biking Division returned to the HCT over the July 4 weekend. HCT remains one of the best. Trail is a bit bumpy between Millersburg and Holmesville. Other than that it is very nice. We rode from Millersburg to Fredericksburg. We tried the new section starting from Glenmont. This is a challenge. If you want flat, it’s not here. A steady uphill grade going out 4 miles. We stopped there and turned around. Never pedaled once heading back. We will try again some day to do the entire length of the new section.

Richland B&O Trail

WCI Biking Division

July, 2020 by wci biking division

The WCI Biking Division returned to the B&O Rail Trail over the July 4 weekend. We decided to ride from Lexington to Butler and back. Trail is nice and flat and in pretty good shape. A little bumpy about a mile to two miles outside of Lexington heading towards Butler. There is one pretty good bump in the trail that had WCI co-founder Rod nearly thrown off his bike. He starts too fast. Other than that, a great trail. We actually saw a plane land on the air strip just outside of Butler. A little detour was necessary in Bellville as they paint the bridge adjacent to the trail.

Kokosing Gap Trail

Trail update

July, 2020 by fish_boat

Myself and another reviewer said the parking lot at Mount Vernon is closed. The other day we started at the other end in Danville and rode to Mount Vernon and the parking lot is now open. In my last review I forgot to say at the 9 mile mark if you start in Mount Vernon there is a great place to stop and relax with a small play ground for the kids. Great bike trail!

Richland B&O Trail

great trail

July, 2020 by dan.ford

Very nice paved trail. Only downside is it is as only about 50% shaded.

Darby Creek Trail

Beautiful trail but far too many “boulders “ and too much sun

July, 2020 by eshawger

Nice shaded trail for the first 1/2 mile or so through a beautiful forest at the south end of Battelle Darby Creek Trail. Then it was 95% sun to the north end and back. The crushed limestone trail wasn’t crushed so well at many points and one of those “pointy bits” likely gave me a flat front tire. Urgh. Fortunately it was a slow leak that I was able to pump back up a few times instead of walking back or breaking out the tube repair kit.

Kokosing Gap Trail

Some road construction

July, 2020 by bcyclgeezer

The trail itself is still beautiful and well maintained, but the State of Ohio is doing a very extensive bridge-building project which has cut off access to the parking lot in Mount Vernon. I suggest you park at the Mount Vernon railroad station (Columbus Avenue) and get on the trail there. You have a push-button to cross the busy street, and Kokosing is about two miles away, a pleasant ride through the town park. (Or you can go the other way on Heart of Ohio Trail - HOOT).

Blackhand Gorge Trail

Easy Scenic Trail

June, 2020 by linzphilipv_tl

It is almost a straight trail. It is next to the river. It is covered by trees on both sides. The river can be seen in between. The trail can be done at any time of the day. There is not much change in elevation.

Kokosing Gap Trail

Best Trail Ever

June, 2020 by lisaecarr

My favorite trail so far. Clearly marked trail heads and parking. Beautiful views of the Kokosing River. Long enough for a great workout. Highly recommend it.

Alum Creek Greenway Trail

Scenic Trail

June, 2020 by brianaalbert528

I rode from the very beginning of the trail in Westerville to the Easton soccer fields and back. The views on this trail cannot be beaten. Beautiful bridges and a mix of sunny and shady spots. There are plenty of parks to stop at along the way. I do feel that the trail is a bit narrower than some of the other trails I frequent, such as the Camp Chase Trail, Robert's Pass or Heritage Trail. This trail is one of the more crowded ones I have been on, and people do not always follow/know trail etiquette. Encountered a few people walking on the wrong side of the trail. On the soccer fields, there was a group of spectators standing on the trail to watch the game. At one point, I rang my bike bell to signal I was passing another cyclist, and on approach, he rode his bike into my path, almost causing me to fall off. He then blocked me from passing for about 30 seconds before he finally gave up. I also witnessed him intentionally swerve in front of a walker walking towards us. Still, a lovely trail and definitely a must-try - hopefully you don't run into the people that I did!

Sawmill Parkway Trail

Lot of stops & open

June, 2020 by linzphilipv_tl

This trail has lot of stops. It is open with no shade & close to the road. It was hard to get a smooth ride. As mentioned this trail has 2 types of road & might not be good for all types of bicycles.

Kokosing Gap Trail

Great trail

June, 2020 by fish_boat

Have road this trail several times since I moved to this area. Never get tired of it. There are a few places to hike if you want a break from bike riding. I always stop at the train and have snacks while watching people explore the train. Another thing I like about it is you can extend your ride on the Heart of Ohio trail. But you should know with construction going on the trailhead near Mount Vernon is closed. As is the connector trail. Seems like that construction has been going on forever.

The trail goes through a few residential areas. It might be hard at certain points as to where the trails is as there are no clear markings. The trail consists of 2 types of roads. Might not be able to go fast as there are a few stops & lot of curves.
