Beautiful easy walk under forest canopy. Cool shade on a warm sunny day.

Northwest Lancaster County River Trail

Go and ride this trail

September, 2023 by dan.duggan

My wife and I drove up from Maryland to ride this trail and it was worth it. We’ve done a lot of trails but this was one of our favorites. We started at the Columbia Crossing River Trail Center and completed the full 14 miles. Except for the first 1/4 mile or so at the start with some street crossings, the trail is extremely well marked and maintained. Mile markers and info signs along the entire route. Plenty of benches with shade trees. The trail had a few bumps from roots but not many. The views of the Susquehanna are fantastic and most of the rider is shaded.

Nice trail but definitely take the time to plan the off-shoot into Mt Gretna. Grab a bite at The Porch Pantry and also bike through the aection of gingerbread style homes located behind the Mt Gretna Playhouse. You'll have a nice view of the lake as well.

Trail leads to a great nature center

Smyrna-Clayton Bike Path

Community Connector

September, 2023 by jmcginnis12

Actually a small network of multi-use trails, the Smyrna-Clayton Bike Path gives residents of both of these communities a great alternative to walking or biking along busy local roads.
The trail is comprised of two main branches, starting from Duck Creek Parkway on either side of the High School and Middle School campus. The northwest branch separates the high school from adjacent mini-storage facilities and a residential subdivision, while the northeast division follows a powerline that runs along a branch of Duck Creek and connects to the west side of Smyrna via a footbridge. Both branches of the trail wrap around the campus and converge just south of a small cow pasture. The trail continues southeast of here, crossing the creek on a footbridge and ending at the intersection of Routes 6 and 300.
In addition to giving local residents a chance to enjoy nature, the trail gives students at the high and middle schools a safe means to walk to and from school . Unfortunately, I noticed some minor deterioration on the footbridge northwest of the Route 6 and 300 intersection. People who are sensitive to loud noises should also be aware that the local fire company's emergency alert siren is just north of the junction between the northwest and northeast branches of the trail.

Monroe Township Bike Path

Easy, shady ride for a hot day!

September, 2023 by xerna17

We ride this trail a few times a year. Its very straight, smooth and mostly flat. Just a few very slight inclines. From Rt. 47 you ride a good distance before there are any road crossings. After that there are a few but only one or two that have a lot of traffic. Most of the trail goes through mature woodlands that give a lot of shade. My only complaint is that there don't seem to be any public bathrooms on the trail or at the trailheads. Otherwise, this is an easy, pretty trail.

Ironton Rail Trail

This trail is as described asphalt, flat, scenic, and shady. It is a 13 mi loop trail with a single access and exit tail. Very enjoyable. We did the trail one time, snacked at a shaded pavilion adjacent to the entrance parking lot and then repeated another 13 mi loop. Highly recommended easy ride.

Perkiomen Trail

bridge still out Labor Day 2023

September, 2023 by dpgnb6fnmv

Loved the trail, but the bridge being out added maybe 3/4 hilly mile on Rt. 29 to our bike ride. Hills also entering Green Lane Park, but the trail itself (not in the park) is very nice and mostly shady. Plenty if trailheads and parking. Meanders alongside the Perk. Creek.

love this trail!!!

September, 2023 by dpgnb6fnmv

Fully paved, mostly shady. Lots of history and old photos displayed along it. We parked at Hokendaqua Park on the loop part. Plenty of parking and a porta potty. One long hill on the trail but it wasn’t bad. Enjoy!

Frick's Trail

it’s been paved

August, 2023 by dpgnb6fnmv

As of Aug 2023, Frick’s Trail has been fully paved. This is a very nice trail, half shady, half sunny. Two portions are connected by sidewalk thru a residential neighborhood. Mostly flat, one hill at the School Road Park end, but not bad. Be careful crossing Orvilla Road.

Northwest Lancaster County River Trail

A must for south central PA!

August, 2023 by 62p9cpnkw7

One of our favorite trails in Harrisburg/Lancaster area. 13 miles of asphalt makes if easy to ride. Lots of turns and great views of the river make it fun. We stop at McCleary's Pub in Marietta for some refreshment either during or after the ride. Great pub food and long beer list. In Marietta a stone hill to get over the railroad tracks is a bit rough, may be easier to walk across, the trail continues on the other side. There is an ice cream shop at the Columbia end that serves hand dipped and refreshing drinks.
