Xenia-Jamestown Connector

Definitely a Hidden Gem

September, 2018 by orangedoug

This former rail line is flat, straight and desolate. Outside of the few miles within Xenia and Jamestown, you are riding between fields of corn or soybeans. Considering that you are surrounded by farms, the trail is surprisingly tree covered for much of its length which I'm sure is a blessing during the summer. At this time of year, there were a lot of acorns and black walnuts on the trail where the trees were the thickest. I suppose that could pose an issue for the tires of some types of bikes.

While there were lots of cyclists out and about when I arrived in Xenia, this trail was lightly travelled. I saw only 3 people while traveling out and back throughout the entire length of the trail. I think that this trail could become much more popular if it was extended into Washington Courthouse, Ohio to connect to the Paint Creek Recreational Trail that extends all the way to Chillicothe, Ohio. (Google Earth shows the undeveloped route of this old rail line.)

James Ranch Connecting Spur

Preferred Link between Little Miami Scenic and Creekside Trail

September, 2018 by orangedoug

As I was told by a local resident, this is the preferred route Xenia residents use to connect between the Creekside and Little Miami Scenic Trails as it avoids the bike lane on busy Detroit Street in Xenia. Listed here on TrailLink as .3 miles my tracking between the two trails came in at 1.25 miles. I think that TrailLink measured from Fairground Road on the fairgrounds to the Creekside Trail rather than the entire length of the connection between the two trails. There is a small residential on-street section from Alameda Drive to the McDonald's on Detroit Street. I imagine that this trail probably is closed during the Greene County Fair. Again this is one of those trails that might be important locally, but not a trail people would travel to Xenia to ride, so why is it listed here?

Towler Road Spur

Why is This Trail Listed Here?

September, 2018 by orangedoug

This is a very short trail that links Xenia, Ohio's Creekside Trail to the town's West Side Park and the neighborhood beyond. I don't think this is a trail that anybody other than Xenia residents would be interested in. To top it off, the trail was closed due to some sort of excavation work.

4-C Bicentennial Trail

Nice ride

September, 2018 by amandzack2003

This is a nice little path but make sure you stretch. We are new to riding and I struggled with a couple of the areas. We saw deer and tons of wildlife on the ride. It has some small benches for breaks and ends in a residential area. Overall very scenic and pleasant.

Tecumseh Trail

A Nice Local Trail

August, 2018 by orangedoug

The Tecumseh Trail is pleasant enough and connects the Northwest portion of New Carlisle, Ohio to Smith Park, a wetlands area along Honey Creek, the New Carlisle Cemetery, and the New Carlisle Sport and Fitness Center. It is roughly a 2.5 mile long path that could make for a relaxed after work, or early evening ride or run. The only complaint I have about this trail is about the crossing over S. Main Street (Route 235). Despite a system of user-activated flashing lights at the crossing almost no driver stopped to allow me to cross the road. Be cautious when trying to cross this road!

From my observations on Google maps this rail line originally connected New Carlisle to the cities of Troy and Springfield, Ohio. I do not know if any group is looking to make a connection to either one of these cities using this old rail corridor.

Paint Creek Recreational Trail

Very enjoyable

August, 2018 by firemangmh

Three of us rode from the west side of Chillicothe to Austin and found it to be a terrific trail. Nice and wide, sunny stretches, shady stretches, great scenery, a few hills that even we could handle, and the Dairy Cone in Frankfort was refreshing stop. There were a couple spots where roots had pushed the pavement up but they were minor and were similar to the spots on the Hockhocking Adena but not as bad as the ones on the Alum Creek Greenway. We look forward to riding this trail more.

Paint Creek Recreational Trail

Nice scenery and greenery, needs some work on the surface

August, 2018 by uschkrat

Rode this morning from outside WCH at the Wetlands, to Frankfort, about 30 miles roundtrip. Nice group of volunteers wanting to improve the trail surface which has been rutted due to roots from adjoining trees. Too bad the Country does not do more to keep this up and provide maintenance. I mean I came from Texas to ride this trail with my nephew, and spent some money in the local towns. Very nicely mowed and maintained rest stops.

Little Miami Scenic Trail

Favorite Trail

August, 2018 by reh13

I drive 7 hours to cycle this trail. Typically start in Xenia, but have started in other towns. Loveland is also a favorite. This trail is one of my absolute favorites. Great surface, plenty of places to stop for breaks.

Creekside Trail

Connector to Everything

August, 2018 by herm.greider

Very important trail to the different bikeways. It provides a connector between Great Miami Trail and Little Miami Trail. You can take this from downtown Dayton to Xenia to head north to Yellow Springs, south to Cincinnati, or east to Columbus.

I ride this from Beavercreek into Xenia or to Yellow Springs. The opposite direction leads through Eastwood Lake Metropark to Huffman Dam or Downtown Dayton.

It is a very wide trail, but is heavily traveled. Many other cyclists and walkers. Families and slow riders. Take it easy and expect some slow spots.

There are many parks with picnic benches and shelters along the way. Good water supply at Beavercreek Community Park (Factory Road) and Beavercreek Station (N Fairfield).

Not well known, but there is a bit of easy gravel in Creekside Reserve. Traveling from Beavercreek Station, take the side entrance on the right into the reserve. The gravel trail is approx 2 miles to Factory Road.

There are also several busy street crossings. Be careful!

Great Miami River Trail

Beautiful trail

July, 2018 by gatorcritter

I rode the section from Dayton to Troy and back on a 90+ degree day. It is a beautiful trail that is well signed, in a good condition, and has a fair amount of shade. There were some rough patches of asphalt near Troy but otherwise it was in excellent condition.

Newport Southbank Bridge (Purple People Bridge)

A Short Ride That Can be Crowded.

July, 2018 by orangedoug

Lots of pedestrians walking across this bridge will slow a cyclist's progress. A must ride for southbound Ohio to Erie Trail riders to complete as part of their journey. Nice views of the Ohio River and the Cincinnati skyline. The few minutes it takes to cross and return are worth the effort.

Mill Creek Greenway Trail

A Recreational, Possibly a Commuter Trail in Industrial Cincinnati

July, 2018 by orangedoug

Like most urban trails the two parts of the Mill Creek Greenway seemed to have started out well when new, but succumbed to neglect and lack of planning and resources. The northern section was the worse of the two. Signs have been tagged with graffiti and plants and shrubs along the trail need to be cut back in spots. The southern section was in better shape as the Salway Park was not as isolated as the Caldwell Playground Park in the northern section. Both sections suffered from a lack of directional signage as it was not clear that the path picked up on the other side of a bridge over Mill Creek in the north section and in the south the trail seems to dead end into a commercial building but continued on the other side of that building.

If you lived in these Cincinnati neighborhoods checking out and riding this trail may be worthwhile if you live nearby. Otherwise don't go out of your way. It is hard to see the gap between the two sections being bridged by additional trail considering that the trail runs along the creek and much of the break in between the two sections is filled with commercial and industrial properties that are unlikely to give an easement to connect both parts to each other.
